Get healthy beautiful hair naturally at home

We all have our dreams of bouncy, shiny, healthy and beautiful hair. How we wish every day is a good hair day! I have put together a few tips from a beautician friend, some advice from my grandma and my own experiences, which thankfully helped me get healthy, nourished hair with simple maintenance care:

Massage

Just like the CTM routine (cleansing, toning, moisturizing) for the skin, it is essential to follow a routine of massage, wash, condition and dry your hair, the right way. Ensure that you pamper each strand of your hair by massaging the scalp with an oil of your choice. This improves blood circulation and strengthens the roots of the hair.

Clean

You need to keep your scalp clean, but you don’t have to shampoo your hair every day even if the label on your shampoo says it is meant for a daily wash. Depending on your lifestyle ( eg., if you are outdoors for long or you sweat a lot) and the weather in your city, you might want to shampoo your hair twice or thrice a week, not more than that. If you still don’t feel “clean”, just rinse your hair with plain water.

Condition

Unlike the shampoo which you apply and massage mainly to the scalp (that’s where most of the sweat and dirt is), the conditioner should only be applied along the length of the hair, especially the tips which are prone to drying and splitting. Never scrub the conditioner on your scalp.

Keep it cool

Always use cold or lukewarm water to wash your hair. Excessive heat damages the hair follicles and causes dryness. Use low heat when using styling tools like blow dryers and flat irons. While using a blow dryer, don’t hold it too close to the hair.

Go natural

Whenever time permits, opt for natural care. Soap nuts as shampoo and egg white/ yogurt/coconut oil as conditioners are some of nature’s gifts for nourishing your hair.

Be gentle

It is always good to dry your hair with a towel before you blow-dry or brush. Hair tends to be weak when it is wet, so never pull or brush vigorously. Go the traditional way and use nature’s best brush- your fingers.

Tap the beauty from within

Always my favorite topic (see this for healthier cooking tips), eating and being healthy always leaves you with a sense of glow and well-being. A diet rich in iron, zinc and omega-3 fatty acids helps maintain healthy hair, skin and nails. Load up on green leafy vegetables, fruits rich in Vitamin C to help iron absorption, nuts, dry fruits and fish. Best ways to get lots of leafy veggies into your diet are smoothies, juices and chutneys. Consuming curry leaves/ mint chutney regularly (at least once a week) is a surefire way to get beautiful, shiny hair. Stay tuned for the recipes which I’ll be posting soon!  

Protect

Tie or braid your hair whenever you workout, go outdoors or go to bed. This will prevent dryness and split ends. For the same reason, trim your hair regularly (once in 2 months, on an average).

Above all, be happy with your hair

Curly, wavy, straight, long, short – whatever be the texture and nature of your hair, love, nurture and celebrate it. Trying to artificially change the nature of your hair may lead to hair fall and dryness.

Let your hair be an expression of self-love.
